I was a summer intern for Heier Weisbrot & Bernstein, LLC (HWB) for the past two summers. HWB is an accounting firm located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I was initially hired in the summer of 2017 to help get the firm paper free. To do this, I had to take all of the old files and scan them into the system. I then created separate client files for all clients and stored the data by client, by year and labeled the documents.

The partners were impressed with both my organizational skills and my accuracy. Accordingly, they gave me more responsibility for the summer of 2017. I spent my time preparing tax returns by inputting the relevant data from the source documents (w-2 forms, mortgage statements, etc.) into the tax software.

In addition, I learned about how to use quickbooks. I entered all receipts (revenues) and disbursements (expenses) into quickbooks. I then reconciled the bank statements to the quickbooks file to ensure that all of the data was input correctly and nothing was missing. Using a bank reconciliation proves all of the transactions we entered through an outside source.

I thoroughly enjoyed the marketing side of my job as well. The firm did not have any client related literature at all. I prepared marketing brochures to take out to prospects which highlight all of the attributes of the firm, including CFO services, offer in compromise services, and tax and full service accounting.

They gave me full reign to use my creative talents to create the brochures. I also went with one of the partners to cold call on attractive prospects including law firms, physician practices, engineering firms, etc. I also created a sales lead list used to gather information on prospects. I then sent emails and an introduction letters that presented and explained the company.

Overall, I gained valuable insight and experience on both accounting and marketing that I definitely plan to utilize in the future.
